Pro Move: Join a Professional Association
When I first started thinking about becoming a coach, a friend introduced me to the Los Angeles chapter of the International Coaching Federation, the governing body for professional coaching around the globe. I joined a few of the chapter’s virtual events and met a few very helpful coaches who helped me learn about the field. Conversations with the people I met through ICFLA helped me eventually choose which coach training program to invest in.
Today, I’m on the ICFLA Board of Directors and serve on a volunteer basis as Communications Director. By joining ICFLA and becoming deeply involved in the organization, I’ve benefited by getting to know coaches from all different specialties and learn from top pros.
This experience has helped me see the value in professional organizations for people in every stage of their career. I recently spoke to the magazine of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) about the value of professional conferences for students and those early in their careers. A few of the benefits I mention in the story are:
Networking and inspiration. You never know who you are going to meet or what new information you’re going to learn that may lead to your next opportunity.
Building your personal brand. By showing up and being active at events and conferences, you’re signaling to potential employers or clients that you’re serious about your career, take initiative and invest in your profession.
Keeping your skills and knowledge fresh. Many, if not most, associations provide professional development opportunities. Learning something new can be an anecdote to boredom - at work or in life.
No matter what field you’re in, there is likely to be a professional association working to advance it. If you’re looking to build your career or change careers, don’t overlook the value of this resource.
