In a Hot Job Market, Should You Stay or Go?
5 Questions to Help You Decide
As the Great Resignation/Great Reshuffle continues, my LinkedIn feed is blowing up with people who are hiring. Clients and friends who were previously happy in their jobs are being lured away by out-of-the-blue opportunities, or are at least intrigued by the possibility of a better situation.
Meanwhile, employers are sweetening the pot with extra benefits and bonuses to convince employees to stay. When opportunity abounds, how do you know whether to stay or jump ship?
Even if you’re not looking to change jobs right now, it’s a good time to check in with yourself. As we enter Spring, the season of rebirth, ask yourself:
How do I feel when I wake up on a work day?
How am I growing?
Does my work allow me to live the life that I want?
What impact is work having on my mental and physical health?
When I envision being in this position a year from now, how do I feel?
Answering these questions honestly will likely spark ideas for areas you might want to work on. For example:
Are there changes in your current role that you can make, such as carving out more time for the type of work that brings you the most satisfaction or flow state?
Are there any volunteer leadership opportunities you can lean into? Or, on the opposite spectrum, do you need to say “no” more when asked to volunteer?
Do you need to create more time for life outside of work?
After some introspection, you may decide to explore what other opportunities are is out there for you. It’s not an either/or situation – you can choose to make your current job better AND look for a different one at the same time.
Remember that you are in charge of your career and your life, and that the choice is always yours.
